BACKGROUND TO THE PAMO-NBS PROJECT
The Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS), Zanzibar in collaboration with the German Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) and the Institute of Fisheries and Marine
Sciences (IH.SM), Madagascar is implementing a two-year research project on
Participatory Modelling for Nature-based Solutions in the Western Indian Ocean (PaMo-NbS), with the activities for the project to be carried out on the Island of Mafia.
The overarching aim of the project is to provide decision makers with qualitative and quantitative decision support tools through participatory modelling to facilitate the implementation of nature-based solutions (NbS) and identify scenarios of an optimized use of local marine ecosystems for and with local communities.
Specifically, the project intends to:
- Understand the local knowledge, resources, actors, and ecosystem services involved in implementing NbS, management, and conservation in the project areas;
- Develop qualitative models of the socio-ecological system from different stakeholder perspectives to identify needs and key areas and strategies for marine ecosystem management, based on local knowledge and stakeholder input through participatory modeling.
- Increase awareness among institutions for including local knowledge in decision making processes and the importance of ecosystems in providing essential goods and services to local communities.
- Facilitate the exchange of local knowledge and experiences, and document best practices related to ecosystem services management and sustainable resource provisioning.
- Increase local capacities for management related activities among relevant institutions in East Africa and enhance the project’s sustainability.
- Strengthen the capacities of local communities and institutions to utilize participatory modeling and local knowledge in ecosystem management and decision-making.
- Develop policy advice on the use of local knowledge in the management of coastal ecosystems; and
- Design decision-support concepts that are grounded in local knowledge and address the specific needs of the pilot sites, facilitating the future implementation of locally supported marine areas and nature-based solutions.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The PaMo-NbS Project Coordinator with assist with the day-to-day duties related to the implementation of the project, under the guidance of Principal Investigator for the project.
These include:
- To familiarize with the PaMo NbS project objectives, activities, approach, and outputs.
- To monitor project activities in line with the project workplan.
- To participate in the preparation and submission of mid-term technical and financial reports
- To prepare and participate in routine project meetings, both physical and virtual and keep meeting records
- To assist in correspondences with the project partners and funders
- To attend to any other activities that will be of benefit to IMS and as assigned by the Director of IMS.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree relevant to marine resource management and livelihoods, such as in the fields of marine sciences, aquatic sciences, resource management, community development
- At least two years’ experience in the implementation similar projects
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Fluency in English and Swahili (verbal and written).
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
- Ability to communicate with a diverse network of partners, collaborators, government and villages.
DURATION:
- The PaMo-NbS Coordinator position is two-year position with a probation of three (3) months.
REMUNERATION:
- PaMo NbS offer an attractive remuneration package to the right candidate depending on his/her qualifications and experience.
