Institute & Project Overview

Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), in collaboration with the Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre (TFNC), MUHAS, and NBS, is implementing the National Micronutrient Biomarker Surveillance (NMBiS) initiative. Under this initiative, a nationwide mapping study is being conducted to assess the availability, quality, and suitability of remnant biological samples stored in health facilities, laboratories, and biobanks across Tanzania.

Position Summary

Medical Attendants will support the implementation of the Remnant Sample Mapping Study. Responsibilities include conducting facility assessments, administering structured electronic questionnaires, assisting with key informant interviews, documenting laboratory storage infrastructure, transcribing qualitative data, and collecting high-quality data using Open Data Kit (ODK).

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Collection & Assessments: Administer structured questionnaires on tablets using Open Data Kit (ODK) following approved protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Qualitative Interviews: Conduct qualitative interviews with facility heads, laboratory managers, and biobank coordinators, and transcribe audio/field interviews into text transcripts for analysis.

  • Infrastructure & Inventory Verification: Verify and document sample storage infrastructure (freezers, refrigerators) and record sample inventory details, storage conditions, and metadata. Ifakara Health Institute Job Vacancies

  • Quality & Compliance: Ensure data completeness and daily upload; address quality queries raised by field supervisors while maintaining strict research ethics and confidentiality.

  • Reporting & Fieldwork: Prepare timely field activity reports, participate in pilot testing/debriefings, and carry out other project duties assigned by the study team.

Qualifications & Entry Requirements

Academic Qualifications

  • Primary Requirement: Post-secondary qualification in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Medicine, or related health fields from a recognized institution.

  • Minimum Requirement: Advanced Level Secondary Education (Form VI) with proven experience in qualitative and quantitative data collection.

Experience Requirements

  • Prior experience in health research, public health surveys, or M&E data collection (added advantage).

  • Hands-on experience using electronic data collection tools (ODK, KoboCollect, REDCap).

  • Experience conducting qualitative interviews and transcription (added advantage).

  • Note: Recent graduates with strong academic records and field experience are encouraged to apply.

  • Fluency in Kiswahili and English (written and spoken).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Full willingness and availability to travel extensively within assigned regions under tight deadlines.
