The Jane Goodall Institute Tanzania (JGI-TZ) is a reputable and rapidly expanding non-governmental organization committed to wildlife research, conservation, socio-economic development, and environmental education. Founded in 1991, the Institute continues the vision and work of its founder, Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, advancing chimpanzee research and inspiring communities to conserve the natural world we all share.

The Institute is seeking to recruit a suitably qualified and competent Tanzanian to fill the following job vacancy:

Job Vacancy: Field Assistant

Duty Station: Gombe National Park, Kigoma

Key Job Responsibilities & Duties:

Main responsibilities will include, but not necessarily be limited to:

  • Attending the morning meeting that outlines the day’s work schedule.
  • Learning and identifying all the baboons in your assigned groups, including their gender, lineage, and names.
  • Observing the behaviors and actions of each monkey to understand their relationships, such as male and female dominance hierarchies, friendships, conflicts, support systems, and family dynamics.
  • Tracking and collecting data on baboons, including their attendance, behaviors (using a check sheet), significant events, and the areas they visit.
  • Identifying the various types of foods consumed by the baboons.
  • Documenting information on other animals encountered by the baboons, such as colobus monkeys, vervets, bushbuck, chimpanzees, bush pigs, and others.
  • Staying with your assigned group at all times, as required for baboon tracking.
  • Ensuring the data you collect on the baboons is accurate and clearly documented, as required, and writing a monthly report on each of your groups.
  • Collecting baboon fecal samples as directed by your supervisor.
  • Participating in the collection of carcasses of baboons when found and submitting them to the lab for post-mortem, or burying them, as appropriate.
  • Assisting in the recovery, cleaning, drying, labeling, and proper storage of baboon skeletons, including marking the bones with their names and the collection date.
  • Being willing to learn and use new tools such as GPS devices, tablets, and other equipment that facilitate baboon- and wildlife-related research activities.

Minimum Job Qualifications and Other Requirements:

  • A Diploma or preferably a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, animal sciences, biology, or any other related field from a reputable university or college.
  • At least three years of working experience in the field of primate or wildlife research.
  • Experience in report writing and a good team player.
  • Competence in basic computer applications (Ms Word and Excel).
  • Fluent in both English and Swahili languages.
  • Ready to live and work in remote areas and in the field.
