Availability: For a period of 1 year Covering the project period.
JOB PURPOSE:
The Translator will play a critical role in facilitating clear and accurate communication between English- and Swahili-speaking personnel throughout the drilling project in Tanzania. The role involves both written translation of technical documents and real-time interpretation during meetings, trainings, and site operations. The successful candidate must have a strong command of both languages, with the ability to understand and communicate industry-specific terminology used in drilling, health and safety, and operational procedures.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Translation & Interpretation
Translate documents, reports, manuals, contracts, and presentations from English/Kiswahili to Chinese and vice versa.
Provide accurate and culturally sensitive interpretations during meetings, workshops, site inspections, and negotiations.
Technical & Industry Content
Translate content with a focus on gas production industry terminology including but not limited to drilling, safety, logistics, environmental standards, and compliance regulations.
Work with engineers and technical staff to ensure accurate translation of technical jargon.
Documentation & Review
Proofread and edit translated documents for clarity, accuracy, and consistency.
Maintain translation databases and term glossaries relevant to the gas production industry.
Support Cross-cultural Communication
Bridge linguistic and cultural gaps to facilitate smooth communication between local and Chinese-speaking stakeholders, workers, or partners.
Assist in training programs, inductions, and safety briefings.
Other Duties
Perform any other duties as being assigned by line Management.
QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Languages, Linguistics, Communication, or a related field; specialized training in translation/interpretation is an asset.
Minimum of 5 years of professional translation/interpretation experience, with at least 3 years in technical, mining, or industrial environments.
Experience supporting infrastructure or drilling projects is highly desirable.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and translation tools/software are advantages.

Language Proficiency: Fluent in Chinese, English and Swahili, with strong grammar, vocabulary, and spelling in technical and conversational contexts.
Technical Accuracy: Understanding of drilling, mining, or oil & gas terminology to ensure precise translations and interpretations.
Attention to Detail: Ability to provide high-quality, error-free translations under time constraints.
Verbal Communication: Strong interpreting skills, especially in high-pressure environments such as safety briefings or incident investigations.
Cultural Sensitivity: Ability to navigate cultural nuances and convey messages appropriately and respectfully.
Confidentiality: Demonstrates professionalism and discretion in managing sensitive project communications.
Time Management: Ability to handle multiple translation tasks, prioritize workloads, and meet tight deadlines.
Team Collaboration: Comfortable working with multinational, multidisciplinary teams in the field.
Adaptability: Willingness to work in remote locations and under field conditions, including site visits and long working hours if needed.
Initiative: Self-motivated and proactive in identifying communication needs and providing support where needed.
