We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Media Technical Lead for an upcoming civil society activity

Role overview

The Senior Media Technical Lead (SMTL) will be responsible for delivering Wajibika’s work on improved media freedom, effectiveness, and sustainability (Outcome 2), as well as ensuring media considerations are embedded within programme strategy and shaping cross-cutting media work across the other two outcomes. The SMTL will be responsible for advising on and overseeing the design of all media and freedom of expression related activities and workstreams, leading partners and ensuring timely implementation of activities within the overall Wajibika program.

This position will be based in Tanzania and is contingent upon award.

Job specification

Technical leadership

  • Participate in overall program design processes with the Wajibika programme team. Lead on defining the approach and activities on all media related components of the program, in collaboration with the Deputy
  • Programme Director, Programme Director and other component leads.
  • In partnership with the Wajibika team, define annual workplans for work with media.
  • Identify local media organisations and coalitions and maintain relationships with them as well as supporting media partners to identify and work with others to build intra and inter-sectoral coalitions.
  • Find opportunities for innovative approaches to program outcomes and objectives.
  • Provide technical advice and capacity building support to media and other partners, including CSOs and government, as needed.
  • Responsible for ensuring that media activities and results reinforce and support the realisation of Wajibika support to civil society and government.

Program management

  • Ensure timely implementation of project activities related to media and any other cross-cutting media related activities. Including technical oversight of media focused grants as well as support to other grants that incorporate media activities.
  • Oversee delivery of the media related M&E and research activities in coordination with the MEL lead. Ensure partner reporting and M&E information is collected and reported.
  • Monitor and track media and access to information developments on the ground to ensure that strategic choices about the programme are made in a timely manner.

Person specification

The Senior Media Technical Lead must meet the following requirements:

  • Experience and a strong working relationship with Tanzanian media houses, organisations, and regulatory bodies.
  • Experience advising and overseeing media development, freedom of expression and access to information programs.
  • Experience in advocacy work, especially around freedom of expression.
  • Strong understanding of and experience in navigating the political economy around media in Tanzania.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, ability to adapt to changing work environments and contexts.
  • Strong ability to convene diverse stakeholders and ideally, experience in forming and/or supporting coalitions to advocate for improvements in media freedom.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Fluent in Kiswahili and English.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field
  • Minimum 6 work years experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO), government agency, or private organization.
