Job Purpose

The Legal Officer provides operational legal support, contract drafting, and regulatory guidance to regional branch management. Reporting to the head of legal, this role oversees litigation, debt recovery enforcement, police and court registry follow-ups, contract negotiation, and staff legal awareness training to safeguard the institution’s assets.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
  • Litigation, Court & Debt Recovery:

    • File and initiate court cases, track case progress, and represent or support the institution in local courts and tribunals.

    • Oversee legal enforcement procedures and work closely with recovery teams and external advocates to execute defaulted loan recoveries.

    • Liaise with law enforcement, regulatory bodies, and court registries regarding active legal disputes and fraud investigations.

  • Contract Drafting & Legal Compliance:

    • Draft, review, and negotiate loan agreements, security perfection instruments, supplier contracts, and corporate agreements.

    • Monitor statutory and regulatory developments in the microfinance sector to ensure full institutional compliance with Tanzanian laws.

  • Advisory, Training & Documentation:

    • Provide daily legal advice and risk mitigation guidance to regional managers and operational staff.

    • Conduct internal legal awareness training for credit and operations personnel regarding contract execution and collateral enforcement.

    • Maintain up-to-date case registers, prepare monthly legal reports, and archive legal records systematically.

Candidate Qualifications & Competencies

Education & Professional Status:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from an accredited university.

  • Added Advantage: Admission to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Tanzania with a valid Practicing License.

Experience & Technical Skills:

  • Work Experience: Minimum one (1) year of relevant practical experience in legal practice, banking, microfinance, or corporate litigation.

  • Legal Knowledge: Sound understanding of Tanzanian commercial law, contract drafting, land law, security perfection, and debt recovery procedures.

  • Tech Proficiency: Computer literate with solid skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Flexibility: Willingness to work in or relocate to assigned operational regions outside Dar es Salaam.
