OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Universal Health coverage – Life Course (UHC_LC) team in WHO supports the country in its efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage through a primary health care approach. It works closely with the Ministry of Health and partners to ensure that the WHO Country Office can:

  • Design optimal delivery strategies to expand the delivery of National Essential Health Care Intervention package – Tanzania,
  • Mobilize resources required to provide essential health services and promote continuous quality improvement in health services,
  • Provide technical assistance for the development and implementation of health financing strategies that maximizes efficiency and value for money in the management and utilization of available resources,
  • Ensure equity in allocating health funds for improving the availability of quality medicines, vaccines, and other medical products, and ensuring quality laboratory services and adequate regulatory frameworks.
  • Convene health stakeholders and contribute to improving coordination mechanisms in the health sector to ensure higher value for money.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Terms of reference

Under the supervision of UHC-LC cluster lead, the intern is assigned the agreed terms of reference:

Review the policies governing the health sector in Tanzania and their alignment with WHO PHC framework.

  • Conduct literature review to identify drivers of mortality and mobility in Tanzania.
  • Participate in data collection for the evaluation conducted by UHC LC Cluster.
  • Documentation of the uptake and utilization of guidelines in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Assist in drafting, formatting and editing policy brief guides/manuals, hand-outs, brochures and reports
  • Assist in organizing a workshop on building capacities of national experts

Learning objectives

The purpose of the WHO Internship Programme is to provide an enriching learning experience for students and recent graduates. Within this internship, the intern will:

  • Understand the objectives of the WHO programmes designed to increase access to quality health services at the country level.
  • Communicate clearly about the achievement of WHO objective of one billion more people accessing Universal Health Coverage by 2025.
  • Understand the difference of work between WHO headquarters, regional offices and country offices
  • Know how to generate local evidence from literature review and surveys results.
  • Prepare background documents for meetings.
  • Develop the outline of a document.

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP

The duration of the internship is 9 weeks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Have completed the equivalent of three years of full-time studies of Health related science, social science or international relation at a university or equivalent institution prior to commencing the assignment; AND be enrolled in a course of study at a university or equivalent institution leading to a formal qualification (applicants who have already graduated may also qualify for consideration provided that they apply to the internship within six months after completion of their formal qualification).

Be familiar with commonly used computer programmes: Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Knowledge of ArcGIS or PowerBI would be an advantage.

Experience

  • Experience in producing academic reports.

Languages

Essential: Expert knowledge of English.

Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of Swahili.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Interns do not receive a salary. They do however receive a living allowance. The allowance depends on the duty station and other external support (grant, scholarships, etc.) received by the intern. In Dar Es Salaam, the maximum amount of the allowance provided by WHO is xxxxxxxxx per month. The exact amount of the living allowance will be calculated for each intern, after selection, based on a legal financial disclosure form that the individual will complete.

In addition, the interns in Dar Es Salaam will receive an allowance.WHO also provides all interns with accident and medical insurance coverage.

In case of field mission, the intern will receive a DSA.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Interns are not eligible to take up a consultant or other non-staff contract in WHO for a period of three months following the end of the internship. However, no such restriction applies to temporary or longer-term staff positions if the vacancy has been advertised and a competitive process completed.
