Job Purpose

The Research Officer (RO) will enhance the project’s data science capabilities by developing analytical models, processing complex input data, deploying analytical workflows, and disseminating findings through peer-reviewed journals, reports, and posters. Additionally, ROs will design and execute independent small-scale research projects that contribute to the overall scope of the MAP project.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
  • Data Management, Analytics & GIS:

    • Obtain, wrangle, manage, and analyze diverse datasets using R, Python, STATA, Excel, and GIS tools (ArcGIS/QGIS).

    • Extract required modeling metrics from published literature and official public health reports.

    • Create data visualizations, graphs, spatial maps, interactive dashboards, and analytical reports.

    • Develop custom code scripts and packages in R-Studio.

  • Research Dissemination & Project Execution:

    • Lead, design, and implement targeted small research projects that support MAP project objectives.

    • Contribute to writing technical reports, peer-reviewed scientific publications, and conference poster presentations.

    • Collaborate with regional and international research partners.

  • Data Governance & IT Standards:

    • Maintain general IT housekeeping, data backups, protocol documentation, and review procedures to promote best practices in data management.

    • Adhere strictly to institutional safety, health, hazard assessment, and workplace incident reporting policies.

Candidate Qualifications & Requirements

Educational Background:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data/Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline.

Work Experience & Technical Competencies:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience managing, wrangling, and analyzing quantitative data.

  • Essential Tool: Hands-on proficiency with R software / R-Studio is mandatory.

  • Programming & GIS: Experience with Python, STATA, GIS tools (handling spatial data and geometry files), and dashboard development.

  • Epidemiological Knowledge: Understanding of vector-borne disease epidemiology (particularly malaria and infectious diseases) and public health concepts.

  • Languages: Professional fluency in English (verbal and written) is required. Proficiency in French, Spanish, or Portuguese is an added advantage.

  • Strong interest in personal career advancement, including pursuing an MSc or PhD in advanced disease modeling.
