Women’s Empowerment Officer 

Tanzania People & Wildlife (TPW) is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and  important natural habitats through a community-driven approach. TPW helps rural communities develop their  skills and abilities to protect natural resources in a manner that maximizes their benefits from these landscapes  while also preserving ecological integrity. Emphasizing the critical importance of community-led initiatives, the 

organization provides information, training, and service level support to its rural constituencies to strengthen  local institutions and community-driven actions for natural resource management and wildlife conservation. 

TPW operates from the Noloholo Environmental Center on the Maasai Steppe in northern Tanzania. Sharing a  boundary with Tarangire National Park, this center acts as TPW’s regional headquarters as well as an educational  center where rural community members improve their understanding of the environment and develop hands-on  skills in natural resource management. From this center, TPW operates programs in four major programmatic  areas: 1) wildlife conservation and human-wildlife conflict prevention, (2) youth environmental education and  adult capacity building & training, (3) natural resource conservation and rangeland management, and (4)  environmentally-sustainable conservation enterprise and development.  

Position Description 

Mama Asali honey is harvested by the Women’s Beekeeping Initiative. The honey and related products provide  sustainable income for rural women, while the beehives help protect critical wildlife habitats. The project  currently empowers more than 1,800 women across 104 groups to develop and grow their own environmentally  friendly enterprises. Mama Asali beekeepers receive initial and ongoing training to build, strengthen, and  expand their knowledge as their businesses grow. The Women’s Empowerment Officer helps drive the program,  dedicating themselves to the success of beekeepers while fostering sustainable practices. This role demands  initiative, adaptability, and a strong work ethic to navigate challenges on the fly. 

General Responsibilities 

  • Oversee the development of marketing materials, secure clients, and create distribution mechanisms for Mama Asali honey and future additional by-products (candles, soap, Lipbams, Honey Lotion, etc.) 
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships with safari companies, lodges, shopkeepers, and  distribution centers for all enterprise-related products and services 
  • Act as a public emissary of TPW’s programs, particularly in terms of its women’s initiative 
  • Empower Women’s groups/Cooperatives with business skills, group Coaching related to sales and  marketing 
  • Assist Women’s groups/Cooperatives with reviewing and restructuring current business planning 
  •  Collaborate with Women’s sales and marketing committee to execute marketing campaigns that  promote beekeeping products  
  • Collaborate with Mama Asali to Conduct a market study/survey to identify potential customers and  target markets for beekeeping products, considering our commitment to supporting rural women’s
  • Support the development of innovative marketing materials that effectively communicate the benefits  of our beekeeping products and their positive impact on environmental conservation.
  • Engage with Women Beekeepers groups/Cooperatives to understand their needs, preferences, and  challenges, and translate these insights into effective sales and marketing strategies. 
  • Work closely with the sales team to identify leads, follow up on inquiries, and schedule appointments  with potential customers. 
  • Participate in sales meetings, Prepare sales contracts with potential customer 
  • Assist in the planning and execution of events, trade shows, and promotional activities to increase brand  visibility and product reach. 
  • Regular Monitoring of sales and analysis of the outcomes of marketing events, campaigns, and  Exhibitions offering insights and recommendations for continuous improvement to women’s groups/cooperatives for business development 
  • Contribute to brainstorming sessions, providing creative input to enhance the branding and positioning  of Mama Asali premium products. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment between sales, marketing, and  sustainability efforts. 

Qualifications: 

  • The successful candidate should have a Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in business, enterprise development  and/or finance, or Marketing, We are looking for an individual with the ability to independently develop a social  enterprise.
  • This requires exceptional leadership and communication skills and an entrepreneurial spirit.  
  • Preference will be given to candidates with prior small business development experience, particularly as it  relates to women’s initiatives. 

Required: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in one of the above fields 
  • Proven experience in small business development 
  • Experience with product distribution, including marketing and communication 
  • Excellent skills with Microsoft Office, Excell 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including training and capacity building, and respect for other cultures
  • Passionate concern for wildlife, local communities and TPW’s mission 
  • Willingness to live and work in remote field settings 
  • Professional Tanzanian citizen fluency in both Swahili and English

Reports to: TPW Chief Program Officer 

Salary & Benefits: Full-time position based on experience and qualifications; salary commensurate with  experience. Basic housing and food provided onsite
