Operating at the DP World Dar es Salaam Terminal, this middle-level position drives site-level environmental management systems (ISO 14001), decarbonization programs, regulatory compliance, and community ESG initiatives. Reporting directly to the Sustainability Manager with functional reporting to the Head of HSE Executive, the Specialist ensures full alignment with Tanzanian environmental legislation (NEMC/EMA), IFC Performance Standards, and DP World Ports & Terminals global sustainability goals.

Key Responsibilities
-
Regulatory Compliance & EMS (ISO 14001): Lead internal/third-party audits, manage Corrective Action Plans (CAPA), maintain aspect-impact registers, and ensure compliance with NEMC, EMA, IMO, and IFC frameworks. Sustainability Specialist

Environmental Risk & Impact Assessment: Perform risk assessments evaluating port operational impacts (dredging, bunkering, vessel emissions, cargo handling) on air, soil, and marine ecosystems.

HAZMAT & Waste Management: Oversee hazardous waste handling, labeling, storage, and disposal according to the IMDG Code and local pollution prevention regulations.

Decarbonization & Resource Efficiency: Execute initiatives reducing terminal environmental footprint, including energy/water conservation, circular economy projects, and greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting.

Permit to Work (PTW) & Spill Response: Enforce environmental controls for high-risk operations (fueling, hot work), oversee marine spill response drills, and maintain emergency spill response kits.

Environmental Monitoring: Manage ongoing sampling programs for air emissions, marine water quality, wastewater discharge, and noise pollution.

Stakeholder & Regulatory Liaison: Serve as the primary operational contact for NEMC, inspection authorities, and NGOs; coordinate environmental permitting and technical reporting.

ESG & Regional Integration: Lead employee sustainability awareness campaigns, represent technical ESG initiatives in People & Culture panels, and present metrics during weekly regional efficiency meetings.
Qualifications & Experience

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sustainability Management, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline (Master’s Degree is an added advantage).

Experience: 2 to 4 years in environmental management, ESG reporting, sustainability consulting, or operational HSE within port, maritime, logistics, or heavy industrial sectors.

Technical Proficiency: Hands-on knowledge of GHG Protocol modeling, Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), waste audit frameworks, and environmental sampling techniques.

Languages: Professional fluency in both English and Swahili with executive-level presentation skills.
Preferred Certifications & Competencies

Certified EMS ISO 14001 Lead Auditor/Internal Auditor, NEBOSH Environmental Certificate, or LEED Green Associate accreditation.

Deep operational knowledge of Tanzanian Environmental Legislation (EMA/NEMC), IFC Performance Standard 6, and World Bank ESS frameworks.

Advanced skills in MS Office Suite and data dashboards for tracking environmental KPIs.
