Doctors with Africa CUAMM (CUAMM) is an International NGO which has been working in Tanzania for more than 50 years for the health system strengthening in order to protect and improve the well-being and health of vulnerable communities. The Organisation has a strong track record on healthcare projects from the demand side (community, referral system, antenatal care) to delivery of services (improving quality in health centers, hospitals etc..). CUAMM focuses on designing health system strengthening projects, with particular attention to the needs of women and children, and tailored to the specific needs of the countries where the organization carries out projects. Through its evidence-based approach, CUAMM works to remove the barriers preventing communities from accessing health services, and to improve the quality of the same services, to achieve accessible, quality and equitable healthcare for everyone.
CUAMM is long-standing partner of Tosamaganga Regional Referral Hospital (TRRH) to improve the overall management of the Hospital and ensure quality of care and equity of access for mothers, newborns and children.

Tosamaganga Hospital is a private not for profit facility. In 2024, the hospital registered around 3,000 deliveries and 750 admissions in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Together with Tosamaganga Hospital and international partners, CUAMM implements the Project MACORESI: Informed, Responsible and Safe Motherhood as a deterrent for obstetric fistula in order to contribute to improving maternal and reproductive health in Tanzania, in particular in the districts of Iringa DC, Kilolo and Mufindi DC. The specific objective of the project is to intervene on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of obstetric complications, with particular attention to vesicovaginal fistula, improving the availability and access to maternal-reproductive services and reducing obstetric mortality. The project aims to improve the condition of women starting from reproductive well-being, by strengthening clinical and obstetric healthcare services, including dedicated diagnostic and treatment services (Result 1), by improving community education and practices on maternal and reproductive health (Result 2), and by enhancing coordination at institutional level to increase advocacy on the vesicovaginal fistula (Result 3).

Job title: Obstetrician /Gynaecologist

OBJECTIVES:

  • The position of Obstetrician/Gyunecologist at Tosamanganga Hospital will therefore have two main objectives: Ensuring the regular function of the Obstetric/Gynecological department, providing the due consultancy in order to guarantee adequate activities’ organization and coordination.
  • This will be defined and carried out in agreement with CUAMM Project Manager and the Director of the Clinical Services.
  • Improving the quality of care of obstetric and gynaecological cases, providing capacity building of the staff working in the department, tutoring activity of the national and expatriate residents, preparing and introducing guidelines and protocols of management of the most frequent obstetric conditions.
  • Providing technical support to establish the referral for the diagnosis and management of vesico-vaginal fistula at Tosamaganga Hospital.
  • Supervising of the clinical activities related to the diagnosis and management of women affected by vesico-vaginal fistula.
  • The achievement of the objectives will imply at least the following task and responsibilities:

Specific Tasks and Activities

For the Objective 1:

  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will be the in charge of the Obs/Gyn Department, daily organising, planning, coordinating and supervising the overall activity;
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will regularly chair the Ward Rounds, together with the other Doctors assigned to the Department and will oversee the clinical and surgical activity;
  • The obstetrician/Gynaecologist will proactively conduct the morning meeting of the Hospital staff:
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will regularly conduct the Obstetric and Gynaecological Clinic;
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will systematically interact with Paediatrician/Neonatologist in the management of complicated deliveries in the delivery Room and Major Theatre;
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will be a formal member of the Hospital Management Team (HMT) and will participate in the respective meetings;
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will supervise the appropriate utilisation of the digital Health Management Information System (HMIS) for patients’ management and data collection.
  • He/She will also facilitate data sharing and analysis.

For the Objective 2:

  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will be responsible for the introduction of adequate standards and guidelines in the Maternity Department, according to National and International Guidelines for obstetric and neonatal care:
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will fully play the role of Tutor of the national and expatriate Residents (post-degree students), organising and coordinating their training experience appraising their performance and skills and, when requested, supporting their operational research;
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will chair the monthly maternal death audit;
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will chair, together with Paediatrician/Neonatologist, the monthly perinatal audit.

For the Objective 3:

  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will coordinate and supervise all the training activities on obstetric-related complications and on prevention, diagnosis, and referral of vesico-vaginal fistula cases, including the surgical camps in collaboration with other institutions in Tanzania;
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will participate to institutional meeting on sexual and reproductive health
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will provide technical support on the procurement of equipment, drugs and consumables
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will coordinate and supervise all the training activities to surgical staff of Tosamangaga Hospital on the diagnosis and treatment of vesico-vaginal fistula

For the Objective 4:

  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will regularly conduct the Obstetric and Gynaecological Clinic for women affected by vesico-vaginal fistula
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will regularly perform major and minor surgical procedures for the treatment of vesico-vaginal fistula
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will regularly provide consultancy on sexual and reproductive health, including the support to group counselling meetings among women affected by vesico-vaginal fistula
  • The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will manage the referrals of women affected by vesico-vaginal fistula to higher-level hospitals

Required specifications and experience

  • Education/training: University degree in medicine and completed specialization in obstetrics and gynaecology
  • General professional experience: at least 3 years of professional clinical experience in gynaecology in hospital related settings

Languages: C1 language skills in English and Kiswahili

Other: IT literacy (MS Office, Windows, ability to use digital health information systems)

Pay and Benefits

  • The starting salary offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market for the position, job-related knowledge, skills and experience.
