Summary:
The U.S. Mission in Dar es Salaam is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Mason in the Facilities Section.

Duties

Under supervision of Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent performs full range of skilled work for masonry construction, maintenance, and repairs at U.S. Government Owned and Leased facilities. The incumbent performs master craftsman level functions related to all types of bricklaying, concrete blockwork, reinforced concreting, stonework, and surface finishes comprising tiling, sand-cement plaster, gypsum plaster, pavers, etc. The incumbent performs specialty work for moisture protection, water proofing, and thermal insulation of buildings. The incumbent provides coverage for emergency service for architectural elements as required for a 24 hours per day, 7 days a week (24/7) operation.

1. Repairing of existing brickwork: 45%

Repair existing brickwork, concrete structures, surface finishes of buildings and tilework including all preparatory, quality, schedule, safety related functions described above for new installations.

2. Building new walls: 25%

Build new walls using concrete blocks, bricks, stones, etc. Perform concreting work for new reinforced concrete structures including all functions for the work such as arranging tools / materials, measuring, cutting / binding rebar, manual concrete mixing, erecting formwork, etc. Work with carpenter to build formwork for concrete structure. Pour concrete if ready-mix concrete required and available. Perform work of new surface finishes including sand-cement plaster and gypsum plaster. Install new ceramic tiles for finish surfaces including arranging tools / materials, measuring, marking, preparing surface, mixing adhesive, grouting joints, etc. Guide work of technicians / helpers assigned to help in the task depending on complexity and volume of work. Perform work to maintain true plumb lines, levels and contours per design. Maintain the assigned tools in good working condition. Account for materials issued and used for each task. Complete work per schedule, using SHEM guidelines for safe work practices and in full measure to avoid call-backs.

3. Preventive maintenance inspection: 20%

Perform scheduled preventive maintenance inspection of all architectural / civil elements of buildings as directed by shop supervisor and as per the O&M manuals. Assist other FM technicians in maintenance tasks for all building engineering systems including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and physical security. Assist to perform work of space reconfiguration projects. Support FM operations including emergency actions, escorting, monitoring contractors. Support Post operations including community events. Drive USG vehicles for travel to US Government Owned and Leased properties.

4. Installation of new/repair existing waterproof: 10%

Install new / repair existing water proofing, moisture protection, and thermal insulation on buildings including all preparatory and quality / safety functions described above for new installations.
Incumbent serves as an incidental operator of official vehicles and meets all requirements outlined in 14 FAM 433.

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of 2 years of work experience as lead mason in construction industry is required.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:

The ability to understand and follow written instructions is required. Ability to read construction drawings and have a good understanding of plumbing industry standards for installation and maintenance of piping systems. The ability to use a variety of tools of the trade is required. Experience of powered tools such as pneumatic hammers and concrete sprayers is required. Physical ability to lift heavy items and work outdoors in hot and humid environment is required. Must have basic math skills for simple calculations of area, volume, etc. and conversion of metric to foot-pound system and vice versa. Must have a valid, current class B&D a car. Must have had a valid driver’s license for a minimum of five (5) years. Basic computer skills and numerical skills is required.

Education Requirements:

Completion of High School is required. Completion of one-year (1) vocational training from an accredited institute recognized as producing technicians in masonry trade is required.

Evaluations: LANGUAGE:

Limited Knowledge (Written/Speaking/Reading) in English is required in order understand verbal requests, read some technical material, and prepare simple reports.

Good working knowledge (Written/Speaking/Reading) in Kiswahili is required in order to communicate with local contractors and other LE Staff. This may be tested.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must know how to protect a building from humidity or water ingress, know about thermal insulation, know about the science of construction materials, know about occupational health and safety. General knowledge of DSM city and its suburbs; and knowledge of shops/stores where materials are available for purchase.
