Institute & Project Overview
Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a leading African health research organization. Under the JaundiceCARE Project, IHI is implementing innovative neonatal jaundice screening and management interventions, including the Picterus Jaundice Pro application, across three major participating referral hospitals (Bugando Medical Centre, Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital, and Mwananyamala Regional Referral Hospital).
Position Summary
The Clinical Officer will provide clinical and implementation leadership for the JaundiceCARE project. The role involves coordinating screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up protocols, training health workers and research assistants, monitoring equipment usage, conducting supervisory visits, and acting as the primary liaison between the project team and participating hospitals. The successful candidate must be ready to start immediately.
Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Implementation Leadership: Support the PI in technical supervision and quality control of research assistants; ensure hospitals implement evidence-based neonatal jaundice care guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Multi-Site Coordination: Coordinate implementation activities across Bugando Medical Centre, Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital, and Mwananyamala Regional Referral Hospital.

Capacity Building & Training: Facilitate clinical training for health workers and research assistants on the Picterus Jaundice Pro application and IMPALA spot-check functionality.

Patient & Equipment Management: Oversee newborn jaundice screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up workflows while monitoring the appropriate use of bilirubin screening devices and phototherapy equipment.

Supervision & Compliance: Conduct regular site supervision visits, ensure strict adherence to study protocols, and organize regular coordination meetings with hospital focal persons.

Research Support: Assist with data collection, policy briefs, scientific publications, and perform additional tasks as assigned by the PI.
Qualifications & Entry Requirements
Academic & Professional Qualifications

Education: Diploma in Clinical Medicine from a recognized institution.

Licensure: Valid practising license issued by the Medical Council of Tanganyika (MCT).
Work Experience Requirements

Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience post-internship.

Proven experience working within hospital settings and Ministry of Health programs.

Demonstrated experience coordinating multi-site health or clinical research projects.
