Job Function:

This position provides the leadership and direction for the day to day operations of the Container and General Cargo terminal. Maintain and create safe working conditions while ensuring and maintaining a high productivity and cost efficient operation. Member of the terminal management team and having a direct influence on the further growth and development of the facility.

Key performance areas:

• Execute strategies for the operations department in line with & contributing to the company vision & strategy, within the borders of business plan & budget. Manage the daily operations according to the agreed operating principles of the business & relationships with customers.
• Participate in selection, negotiation & finalizing agreements with suppliers & customers & where appropriate be responsible for execution & maintenance of service levels as agreed.
• Contribute input to development in technology & systems as applicable to improve efficiencies in cost, productivity & customer service.
• Ensure compliance with HSSE policies & procedures by all operational staff.
• Liaise closely with shipping companies, customs agents, trucking companies, Customs, port authorities, and other statutory authorities to ensure that their requirements are met.
• Measure and monitor performance against critical criteria, policy and guidelines.
• Manage all people matters, internal and external stakeholders including Labour Unions.
• Ensure that the terminal adheres to global standards for container terminal operations.
• The incumbent is expected to improve existing methodologies, processes and measurements when executing duties on an ongoing basis.

Qualifications required:

• Preferably a university degree in logistics, maritime and port, or process/industrial engineering or a marine qualification at least at Masters First Class level (where he has had command of a vessel).
• Post Graduate studies in Port and/or Terminal Management, or related business studies.

Skills and experience required:

• Minimum 10 years in operations management roles in Container and General Cargo terminals.
• Understanding of the container shipping industry and modern terminal operations.
• Experience on vessel/yard planning and yard strategy and preference knowledge of TOS applications such as Navis, Zodiac, etc.
• Experience in cost and productivity optimisation through process optimisation.
• Fluent in Kiswahili or other local language (Preferred) and English (Essential).
