Job Purpose

The Charge Up Trainer delivers classroom and practical underground training, coaching, and competency assessments for all charge-up and blasting personnel. Reporting to the Development Superintendent, this role ensures all explosive handling, pattern charging, Electronic Blasting Systems (EBS) deployment, and misfire protocols strictly comply with Tanzanian mining regulations and Barrick safety standards.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

• Training Delivery & Competency Assessment:

  • Conduct theoretical and underground field training on explosive storage, transportation, development heading charging, production stope preparations, and blast tie-ins.

  • Train personnel on modern electronic, non-electric, and digital firing systems (e.g., i-kon, EBS).

  • Assess operator competencies against national and site-based standards, maintaining records on the site’s Learning Management System (LMS).

  • Design Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Standard Work Procedures (SWPs), and targeted coaching plans to address skill gaps.

• Safety Leadership & Blasting Compliance:

  • Enforce strict compliance with Tanzanian explosives regulations, mining safety laws, and critical control management.

  • Conduct field task audits, safe work verifications, and participate in incident investigations related to blasting, misfires, or dangerous occurrences.

• Operational & Drill/Blast Alignment:

  • Collaborate with Drill & Blast Engineers and Charge Up Supervisors to align training with daily underground production schedules and blast design execution.

  • Onboard new underground charge-up operators and verify their site entry explosive qualifications.

Candidate Qualifications & Experience

Education & Certifications:

• Training Qualification: Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (or equivalent recognized VET/industry training credential).

• Blasting License: Valid Shotfirer / Blaster License or equivalent official explosives competency certification.

Work Experience & Technical Competencies:

• Mining Experience: Minimum 5 to 10 years of underground charge-up and blasting experience within high-production underground mining operations.

• Technical Mastery: Hands-on experience with modern electronic detonator systems (i-kon, EBS, smart blasting tech), stope loading, stemming, pattern tie-ins, and misfire remediation.

• Instructional Experience: Proven track record in training, mentoring, or assessing underground charge-up crews.

• Systems & Safety: Experience using Learning Management Systems (LMS), hazard identification, risk management frameworks, and emergency response protocols.
