Position: Business Development Officer

Job Summary

The Business Development Officer is responsible for recruiting and managing borrowing customers within the Micro-SME segment (including Kua Nasi, Agriculture/NBC Shambani, and LaRiba). Operating from the Tegeta Branch, the role focuses on growing a high-quality loan portfolio, mobilizing deposits, cross-selling bank products, and ensuring all credit activities adhere strictly to NBC’s Credit Policy and Product Procedure Manuals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Loan Portfolio Growth & Onboarding:

    • Identify, negotiate, and convert lending leads into quality borrowing clients within established Turnaround Times (TAT).

    • Onboard eligible Micro-SME customers in line with product specifications and safeguard bank interests across internal and external engagements.

  • Credit Underwriting & Appraisal:

    • Receive, review, and verify credit applications against mandatory documentation checklists.

    • Conduct credit assessments/appraisals to evaluate applicant creditworthiness.

    • Collaborate with the Credit Risk Committee (CRC) to conduct client site, business, and collateral validation visits.

    • Coordinate with HQ teams (Retail Credit/Business) to resolve credit queries promptly.

  • Portfolio Management & Quality Control:

    • Ensure disbursed facilities adhere to approved terms and execute post-disbursement visits to verify fund utilization.

    • Maintain up-to-date client documentation and branch credit records.

    • Facilitate timely facility renewals or refinancing for eligible accounts.

    • Monitor portfolio health, execute turnaround or recovery measures, and implement interventions to control delinquency.

  • Deposit Mobilization & Cross-Selling:

    • Drive deposit collection from new and existing Micro-SME clients across Kua Nasi, NBC Shambani, and La Riba segments.

    • Cross-sell the bank’s broader portfolio of retail, digital, and commercial products.

  • Relationship Management, Capacity Building & Reporting:

    • Serve as a trusted business advisor to clients, offering guidance on credit structuring and business growth.

    • Conduct product awareness sessions and mass marketing/training for existing and prospective customers.

    • Prepare and submit regular performance reports and attend mandatory CRC, loan delinquency, and collection meetings.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Finance, Accounting, Agribusiness, Banking, Economics, Planning, or related business fields. (A Master’s degree or professional banking certification is an added advantage).

  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year of working experience in the banking industry. Prior experience in Micro-SME lending is highly desirable.

  • Core Competencies:

    • Practical understanding of Micro-SME credit underwriting, risk assessment, and portfolio monitoring.

    • Commercial thinking, customer service excellence, and deposit mobilization capabilities.

    • Strong networking, persuasion, communication, and relationship management skills.

    • Digital familiarity and adaptability to organizational change.
