Job Purpose

The Mechanical Engineer plays a pivotal role in ensuring high equipment uptime, plant reliability, and smooth mechanical operations across the manufacturing site. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, this role leads predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance programs, supervises technical crews, oversees machinery installation/commissioning, and drives continuous process improvements.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
  • Maintenance Execution & Reliability:

    • Plan, schedule, and execute preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance to optimize plant availability and eliminate unplanned downtime.

    • Inspect, troubleshoot, and overhaul heavy industrial mechanical machinery, including flour milling equipment and associated continuous-process plant systems.

  • Operational & Team Leadership:

    • Supervise, mentor, and direct day-to-day work for maintenance technicians, fitters, and external service contractors.

    • Assist in the installation, testing, alignment, and commissioning of new plant machinery and technical equipment.

    • Manage critical spare parts inventory, monitoring stock levels to prevent operational disruptions.

  • Cross-Functional & Safety Coordination:

    • Coordinate maintenance schedules closely with the Milling Operations team to maintain seamless production flow.

    • Uphold strict compliance with Occupational Health & Safety (OHS), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and internal quality assurance standards.

  • Performance Analysis & Continuous Improvement:

    • Track and analyze Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to enhance mechanical equipment reliability.

    • Compile technical maintenance reports and recommend continuous improvement initiatives to boost overall plant operational efficiency.

Candidate Profile & Qualifications

Education & Professional Registrations:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university.

  • Professional License: Professional registration with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) of Tanzania is an added advantage.

Work Experience & Technical Competencies:

  • Experience Level: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on mechanical maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Industry Background: Direct experience in flour milling, food manufacturing, FMCG, or continuous process industries is highly desirable.

  • Specialized Expertise: Demonstrated technical experience operating and maintaining Bühler milling equipment is a distinct advantage.

  • Proven leadership abilities in managing technical teams under high-volume production schedules.

  • Solid working knowledge of safety management frameworks and food safety hygiene standards (GMP/HACCP).
