VACANCIES ANNOUNCEMENT
The Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU) based at the National Institute for Medical Research campus in Mwanza, Tanzania is a collaborative research unit of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the National Institute for Medical Research. The mission of the Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit is to contribute to improving health through the development and evaluation of interventions against HIV and other health problems by conducting research, including clinical trials, to the highest international standards; to enhance the capacity to carry out such research in Tanzania and the East African region; and to contribute to the translation of research findings into health policy. MITU is currently collaborating with other international research partners to implement a trial evaluating a single dose of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in males to reduce population prevalence of HPV. A large-scale community-based survey will be conducted as part of this trial, and the Unit is now inviting applications from highly motivated and suitably qualified candidates to fill the following positions:
Position 1: Field Coordinator (multiple positions available)
Specific responsibilities
- To oversee and support multiple field teams within a community based clinical trial.
- Ensuring that team members follow the trial protocol and appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and field manuals.
- Providing trial information to community leaders and potential participants, ensuring the information has been understood and any queries have been answered.
- Ensuring appropriate handling, storage, transportation and recording of samples.
- Ensuring all team members complete documents according to good documentation practice.
- Overseeing stock management for teams.
- Ensuring participant confidentiality is maintained during all trial procedures.
- Ensuring GCP compliance in all tasks and that relevant training is kept up to date and training logs completed.
Essential qualifications
- At least 3 years of experience leading research.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Swahili.
- Degree from a recognised institution.
Position 2: Medical Doctor (one position available)
Specific Responsibilities
- To provide trial information to potential participants and ensure the information has been understood and any queries from the participants have been answered.
- To perform physical examinations and sample collection according to standard operating procedures, following all required QA and reporting requirements.
- To collect data as required for the trial, completing source documents according to standard operating procedures.
- To follow all requirements according to the study protocol and the principles of good clinical practice.
- Responding to requests for clinical support from survey team leads.
- Ensuring good prescribing practice is followed.
- To ensure drugs and equipment are kept in the field according to manufacturer’s requirements and ensuring accountability of all drugs is documented.
- Leading a small team of field-staff
Essential Qualifications
- Candidate must be a fully-registered medical doctor, with a medical degree from a recognised university.
- Clinically active within the past 3 years with evidence of current registration to practice medicine in Tanzania.
- At least 3 years of medical research experience.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Swahili.
Position 3: Research Assistant (Nurse/Clinician) (multiple positions available)
Specific Responsibilities
- To provide trial information to potential participants and ensure the information has been understood and any queries from the participants have been answered.
- To perform physical examinations and sample collection according to standard operating procedures, following all required QA and reporting requirements.
- To collect data as required for the trial, completing source documents according to standard operating procedures.
- To follow all requirements according to the study protocol and the principles of good clinical practice.
Essential Qualifications
- Fully-registered nurse practitioner or clinical officer (CO) with an up-to-date license to practice in Tanzania.
- At least 2 years of post-qualification experience in hospitals or clinics.
- Experience of working within a research setting.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Swahili.
Position 4: Community Mobilizers / Tracers (multiple positions available)
Specific responsibilities
- Providing study information to community members.
- Working closely with local government and community leaders and health providers in the study area.
- Locating potential participants in the community.
- Completing electronic and paper-based forms as required.
- Ensuring the trial management team and engagement teams are updated with any information relevant to the trial such as rumours and potential withdrawals.
Essential qualifications
- At least a certificate in health or community development studies or related field.
- At least one year’s experience in field research studies.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in Swahili, Sukuma speaker would be an advantage.
Position 5: Registration Clerk (multiple positions available)
Specific responsibilities
- Keeping records of recruited participants.
- Working with clinical team to manage participant flow and follow-up visit appointments.
- Checking all documents and samples are completed and labelled accurately according to the principles of good clinical practice.
Essential qualifications
- Completion of secondary school education and at least a certificate in health or community development studies or a related field.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in Swahili and English.
- Experience in record keeping within a clinical trial setting.
