DAR ES SALAAM: Motorists have to dig deeper into their pockets this month after fuel prices increased due to changes in global markets.

The price of petrol has increased for consignments delivered in the country. However, consumers of diesel will enjoy relief following a slight decrease in price.

The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) announced on Wednesday that retail prices of petrol in Dar es Salaam increased by 57/-, while diesel prices have seen a decline of 14/- per litre.

According to EWURA, in Dar es Salaam, petrol will be sold at a retail price of 3,314/- per litre compared to 3,257/- last month, while diesel will be sold at 3,196/- per litre down from 3,210/- in April.

Kerosene price in Dar es Salaam remained at 2,840/-. In the Tanga Region, petrol prices have increased to 3,360/- per litre from 3,303/- in April, while diesel declined to 3,242/- per litre from 3,256/- last month, with the kerosene price remaining at 2,886/-.

According to EWURA, changes in the prices of petroleum products this month are attributed to a rise in world oil prices by an average of 3.90 per cent for petrol and an average decrease of 1.31 per cent for diesel.

The authority further attributed that a decrease in premiums for the importation of petroleum products by an average of 7.21 per cent for petrol and 2.15 per cent for diesel for Dar es Salaam Port.

“The changes in petroleum prices are attributed to the change in the exchange rate and the continuous use of the EURO for the payment of imported petroleum products,” reads part of the statement.

Furthermore, a decrease in premiums for the importation of petroleum products by an average of 7.21 per cent for petrol and 2.15 per cent for diesel for Dar es Salaam Port, for Tanga port decreased by 10.14 per cent for petrol and 23.18 per cent for diesel, and a decrease by an average of 5.32 per cent for both petrol and diesel for Mtwara Port.

Kyerwa District in Kagera Region has recorded the highest prices for fuel, with the price of petrol increasing to 3,551/- per litre compared to 3,495/- last month.

Diesel prices have decreased to 3,420/- per litre from 3,448/- per litre in April. According to EWURA statistics, Kyerwa District is the area with the highest fuel prices, where consumers with 10,000/- can only get about two and a half litres of petrol.
