Job Purpose:

Lead and manage the Bank’s litigation portfolio and strategic legal engagements to minimize risk and ensure compliance. Oversee dispute resolution, coordinate with external counsels, and provide timely legal advice on recovery and operational matters. Drive team performance through coaching, resource planning, and capacity building to deliver efficient legal support across the bank

Main Responsibilities:

Business and Operational delivery

  • Support the Head of Legal on effective and efficient management of the Litigation and Strategic Engagements Unit.
  • Prepare court documents/pleadings and represent the bank in courts of law.
  • Ensure effective management and monitoring of all cases and stakeholder engagements.
  • Ensure effective building and maintenance of relationships with key stakeholders such as Judiciary,
  • Solicitor General’s office, National Prosecutions Services, Land Registries and Law Enforcement Organs.
  • Ensure provision of court cases for contingent liability complies with the approved Bank framework on a quarterly basis.
  • Ensure case management system is in place and functions to the best standards in the industry.
  • In liaison with the Head of Legal, ensure proper attendance of all bank operations matters involving law enforcement organs, the evidence on record is assessed and the Bank’s senior management is advised accordingly.
  • Coordinate reporting of criminal matters to law enforcement organs with the Head of Legal.
    Liaise with the Director of Public Prosecutions and watch court briefs in litigated criminal cases the bank has interest.
  • Ensure any litigation matter (s) that involve significant potential financial and/or reputation damage to the bank including major fines and penalties emanating from regulatory proceedings, be reported to bank’s senior management accordingly.
  • Ensure any public statement including media briefing or response to media enquiry about litigation matters is approved by the Head of Legal.
  • Ensure all court-related documents, agency notices and all requests from the law enforcement organs once served to the branch network and head office are promptly attended.
  • Ensure Litigation is effectively carried out through services of both internal and external legal counsels and advocates.
  • Provide guidance to other departments and ensure that all queries related to case management and various orders (Legal) are resolved.
  • Be a custodian of the list of in-house and external counsels who are handling the Bank’s cases.
  • Provide legal advisory services to the Bank on all legal issues related to cases.

People management

  • Build and develop a high-performing team through mentoring, coaching, and on the job training.
  • Oversee resource planning, succession management, and training needs analysis.
  • Act as an escalation point for unresolved queries and ensure timely resolution.
  • Drive continuous improvement in legal processes and reporting standards.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must have sufficient knowledge of all legal regulations in Tanzania.
  • Adequate knowledge in standard computer applications
  • Communication, Decision Making, and Influencing skills
  • Ability of working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines.
  • A quick learner who can work under minimum supervision.
  • Change Management skills and with ability to take varying approaches with a dynamic set of stakeholders
  • Strategical thinking with problem-solving skills
  • Strong leadership skills and interpersonal skills

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Holder of a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized university
  • Master’s degree in law is an added advantage.
  • Must enrolled as and a practicing advocate
  • Not less than 5 years in a legal environment
  • Leadership experience
