Job Summary:
Mine Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, and supervising mining operations. The role involves analysing geological data, designing mining plans, overseeing production, ensuring safety compliance, and optimizing mining processes.
Key Responsibilities:
Geological Analysis
- Analyse geological data to understand the composition, structure, and quality of ore deposits. • Collaborate with geologists to assess the feasibility of mining projects and identify suitable extraction methods.
Mining Design and Planning
- Develop detailed mining plans and layouts, considering safety, environmental impact, and economic factors.
- Determine the best mining methods, equipment selection, and drilling/blasting techniques for efficient resource extraction.
Production Supervision
- Oversee daily mining operations, ensuring adherence to the mining plan and safety protocols. • Monitor production rates, equipment performance, and ore quality to optimize efficiency and productivity.
- Follow through the timely maintenance of machineries to ensure continuous production as per the set plan.
Safety Compliance
- Implement and enforce safety protocols to prevent accidents and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Conduct safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations in collaboration with HSE Officer to maintain a safe working environment.
Environmental Management
- Develop and implement environmental management plans to minimise the environmental impact of mining activities.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and contribute to reclamation and rehabilitation efforts.
Equipment and Resource Management
- Manage mining equipment, ensuring proper maintenance, repair, and replacement as necessary. • Optimise resource usage, including labor, equipment, and materials, to enhance operational efficiency.
Budgeting and Cost Control
- Prepare and manage budgets for mining projects, monitoring expenditures and cost variances. • Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising safety and quality standards.
Data Analysis and Reporting
- Oversee the collection and analysis of mining data, including production figures, costs, and quality metrics.
- Prepare regular reports detailing mining performance, challenges, and improvement initiatives.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with local communities, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies to address concerns and maintain positive relationships.
- Participate in community engagement activities and provide information about mining operations.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities for process optimization, cost reduction, and productivity improvement. • Stay updated with industry advancements, technologies, and best practices to enhance mining processes and inform the relevant personnel in the organisation.
- Liase with Quality and Compliance Unit on quality test for the mine areas.
- Perform any other relevant duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor from time to time.
Key Qualifications:
Academic and Experience Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, or a related field
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification is mandatory.
- Registration with Engineers Registration Board.
- At least 5 years of experience in mining engineering, including both underground and open-pit operations.
Technical Competencies
- Familiarity with safety regulations, environmental standards, and best practices in the mining industry.
- Proficiency in mining software and tools for geological modelling, mine planning, and scheduling • Strong knowledge of mining methods, drilling/blasting techniques, and equipment selection. • Expertise in selecting appropriate mining methods based on geological and environmental factors. • Knowledge of drilling and blasting techniques to break rocks efficiently and safely. • Understanding of explosive materials and their appropriate use in mining operations. • Expertise in mine safety regulations and implementation of safety protocols.
Behavioural Competencies
- Commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and ethical conduct in mining operations • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to assess geological data and resolve operational challenges.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical reports and team coordination. • Leadership abilities to manage teams, delegate tasks, and foster a collaborative work environment.
