Maintenance of Law and Order: Local governments are entrusted with maintaining law and order within their jurisdictions. The 1988 Local Government Reform In Nigeria: What you Should Know
The 1988 Local Government Reform in Nigeria marked a significant milestone in the country’s governance system. It aimed to address various challenges and improve local government administration. Led by President Ibrahim Babangida, the reform sought to establish local government as the third tier of government, enhancing its role in national development and addressing the issues faced after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, Presidential elections.

To achieve this, a ten-man committee was formed, chaired by Professor Robert Ola, and tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of relevant documents. The committee’s report, developed between October 1991 and January 1992, introduced significant reforms known as the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) and Presidentialism at the local level.

These reforms laid the foundation for a more efficient and effective local government structure, making the Babangida administration one of the most transformative in terms of empowering local communities.
