Position Purpose:
The purpose of this role is to develop, implement, and oversee health and safety systems and processes related to the project construction of the Nyanzaga gold mine. The role also ensures that contractors adhere to all relevant health and safety regulations and company policies, promoting a safe working environment across the project site. The Health and Safety Superintendent will coordinate field activities for the Perseus Health and Safety personnel.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Oversee contractor HSE performance, ensuring compliance with regulatory and company-specific safety standards.
- Review and approve the contractor’s HSE management plan to ensure alignment with the project’s safety objectives.
- Implement and manage the fatality risk management program.
- Conduct safety audits and inspections of contractor activities, identifying hazards and ensuring corrective actions.
- Lead incident investigations for significant safety events, ensuring proper root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Monitor and report on health and safety performance, providing regular updates to the Project HS Manager and stakeholders.
- Ensure site personnel are adequately trained to perform roles safely.
- Facilitate regular safety meetings, including toolbox talks and safety committee meetings, fostering communication and improvement.
- Ensure that all contractor safety documentation is up-to-date, accessible, and compliant with project standards.
- Assist in the management of the medical clinic.
- Develop and manage the emergency response team and plan.
- Participate in emergency drills and ensure readiness for potential incidents.
- Provide technical input and support to Nyanzaga Mine on health and safety matters.
- Supervise subordinate employees, promoting professional relationships consistent with Perseus values.
- Develop training and development matrices for health and safety personnel.
- Manage the performance of direct reports, including coaching, feedback, and annual appraisals.
Qualifications and Experience:
Tertiary qualifications and NEBOSH in OHS management.
- Minimum of 10 years in mine site HSE management roles, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or superintendent position.
Technical Capabilities:
- Experience in social development project management at operations/site level.
- Experience in planning and execution within a project setting.
- Extensive experience in managing HSE functions for large-scale construction projects, particularly in the mining industry.
- Proven ability to manage contractor HSE performance in developing countries.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, fostering a positive safety culture.
- Experience with incident investigation and ICAM.
Non-Technical Capabilities:
- Understanding of project scheduling and business planning processes, and their application to critical path timelines in project development.
- Ability to work independently without guidance.
- Ability to challenge constructively and achieve collaborative success.
- Proficient in analyzing and interpreting information across various activities.
- Effective communication in both English and Swahili, both written and verbal, including the ability to write reports, make presentations, and run meetings.
- Ability to develop people capabilities, including coaching both direct and indirect reports.
- Resilience, flexibility, and adaptability to manage teams and balance professional rigor in dynamic environments.
- Ability to build constructive relationships internally and externally.
