1.0 Background Information

Rikolto in East Africa works to support actors in the food systems to unlock the potential to feeding the world while taking care of the environment. To this goal there is a need to strengthen the capacity of the partners we work with. We believe that capacity building will help to strengthen our partners to harness the dynamics of various food chains with a focus on both formal and informal markets. Our target final beneficiaries are farmers, traders and consumers, youth, female and male. Smallholder farmers organizations, private sector businesses and Cities are the key actors we work with to achieve the desired changes in the food system. Among of the strategies Rikolto uses to unlock potentials is strengthening the capacity of farmer business organizations (FBOs) including groups and co-operatives into strong and viable business organizations/partners to actively engage as key players in the value chain.

Rikolto is partnering with WorldVeg to implement the “Accelerated Innovation Delivery Initiative,” (AIDI). Under this project, Rikolto collaborates with WorldVeg to strengthen agricultural productivity in Northern Tanzania. Emphasizing accessibility, affordability, and superior quality vegetable seeds, alongside comprehensive advisory services, the initiative aims to empower smallholder farmers in the Manyara, Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions. By enhancing vegetable production and productivity, particularly among youth and women, the project strategically addresses nutrition, income generation, and job creation. The collaboration aims to improve the vegetable value chain by optimizing stakeholder linkage for enhanced inputs and market access. Integration of high-yield, disease-resistant, and demand-driven vegetable varieties underlines the project’s commitment to sustainable horticultural sub-sector development, improving trade, changing lives, and ensuring a prosperous future for smallholder farmers in Tanzania.

Additionally, the gender implementation plan prioritizes the active participation of youth and women in project interventions, with a commitment to following the 60% youth and 55% women rule in some of the relevant project activities.
