Context

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Communications Officer, the Communications Associate supports the formulation and implementation of the communications and advocacy strategies to increase the standing and awareness of UNFPA Mandate with partners, the media and the public. The Communications Associate promotes a client-oriented approach in UNFPA.

A communications strategy tightly linked to program priorities helps position the Country Office in key development markets as a leader in ways that boost demand for various service lines and increase overall business opportunities.

The overall objective of the Communications Associate is to support TCO to both document and communicate results, leveraging a variety of platforms, including social media with the aim of identifying positive results and good practices that can be utilized to highlight UNFPA’s work in Tanzania (internally, externally) while at the same time sharing with key stakeholders for outreach, advocacy and policy influence- all of which needs to be fully in-line with UNFPA’s Corporate Communication Strategy in order to increase visibility of UNFPA’s Mandate and achieve the UNFPA’s three transformative results

Task description

  • Supports the formulation and implementation of internal and external communications and advocacy strategies, supports business development focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Preparation and conduct of communications need assessments for CO (projects, country programme and corporate change initiatives, etc.)
  • Provision of information for elaboration of CO communications and outreach strategy based on the corporate communications strategy.
  • Development of communication materials for advocacy and awareness-raising campaigns, including briefing materials and press releases in coordination with the supervisor.
  • Review of reference materials, identification of reference materials for retention. Maintenance of information database and photo library.
  • Support the Organization and implementation of joint UN International Days campaigns (UN Day, 16 Days of Activism, International Women’s Day, World’s AIDS Day, etc.)
  • Draft talking points, remarks and speeches for the Representative
  • Provides support to the elaboration and implementation of the CO publications strategy and plan focusing on the achievement of the following results:
  • Provision of inputs and information for elaboration of CO publications strategy and plan based on the corporate publications policy.
  • Identification of storylines for publications and articles contributing to debates on key development issues.
  • Technical supervision of translation/adaptation/rewriting of information received printing and dissemination of publications and audio-visual materials.
  • Supervision of publications dissemination.
  • Develop key communication materials in support of elevating and advancing the work and results of UNFPA in Tanzania to a wide audience in a clear and succinct way utilizing various platforms.
  • Develop communications advocacy materials to amplify data and evidence from the Census and Demographic Health Survey (DHS), investment cases for the transformative results, and other strategic initiatives to advance TCO positioning at national, regional and global levels.
  • Develop Human Interest Stories that highlight the work of UNFPA, including in humanitarian settings
  • Elaborate key policy briefs based on pertinent study/research findings and in response to the relevant context/need.
  • Provide editorial support to TCO Annual Reports and support the elaboration of the 2024 Report.
  • Provide communication and editorial support to interventions/initiatives that advance implementation of the 9th Country Programme (July 1, 2022- June 30 2026); UN Common
  • Provide any other documentation and communication activities deemed necessary.
  • Perform any other tasks as required by the supervisor

Work Relations:

  • Works with programme and project staff to produce knowledge products to improve understanding of the issues and lessons learned emerging from programme work
  • Supports programme to prepare compelling presentations, and other outreach material as requested

Eligibility criteria

  • Age: 27 – 80
  • Nationality: Candidate must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment.

Required experience

  • 3 years of experience in Journalism, mass media and broadcasting, public information and reporting, other communications related experience.
  • Experience in Developing Social Media content will be an added advantage
  • Experience with development work will be an advantage, but not a requirement.
  • Proven experience in daily media monitoring, social media engagement, preferably with a multilateral or international development organizations
  • Outstanding drafting skills and creative storywriter
  • Ability to work independently and under tight deadlines
  • Ability to write quickly and concisely in an attractive and compelling style
  • Experience in conceptualizing and managing the production of printed material, including detailed reports
  • Experience with digital communications
  • Familiarity with dealing with the media
  • Highly organized and able to work on multiple projects at the same time, while delivering on short timelines

Living conditions and remarks

There are about 61.74 million people living in Tanzania with 51% female population. The population is particularly concentrated in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar City and their metro areas. Despite these urban centers, just under 70% of the people living in Tanzania still reside in rural areas.

Tanzania has a proud and long-lasting tradition of harmony; and a culture that places great emphasis on welcoming others. It is generally a safe and peaceful country. However, just like any other country it is wise to observe certain precautions, especially in larger urban areas.

The duty station is Dar es Salaam translated as the ‘Haven of Peace’. Dar es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania, as the major port and economic centre. It is an international and multicultural city with a mix of religions. Dar es Salaam has a very humid climate and relatively stable temperatures
