Job Summary

The Business Banking Relationship Manager is responsible for managing and growing a portfolio of Business Banking customers by building long-term relationships grounded in efficient, reliable, and high-quality service delivery. The role focuses on making timely risk decisions, ensuring operational consistency, and maximizing risk-adjusted portfolio returns.

A key component of the role is business development, both through acquiring new clients and increasing wallet share among existing customers.

Job Purpose

Manage and sustain a portfolio of Business Banking customers.
Build trusted, long-term customer relationships.
Deliver timely credit and risk decisions.
Maximize risk-adjusted portfolio contribution.
Drive new business acquisition and portfolio growth.

Key Accountabilities & Time Allocation

1. Sales & Service (65%)

  • Maintain Relationship Plans for all customers, ensuring prioritized and meaningful engagement.
  • Conduct annual and interim reviews of customer borrowing facilities.
  • Conduct annual and interim reviews with non-borrowing customers.
  • Define and communicate key messages, including service standards, pricing agreements, relationship contacts, and product updates.
  • Resolve customer complaints and identify sustainable solutions.
  • Identify, recommend, and sell appropriate products to meet customer needs, both proactively and reactively.
  • Research, develop, and follow up on target lists for potential new business.

2. Business Management (30%)

  • Identify priority customers using Customer Relationship Planning tools.
  • Assess current and potential customer contribution to the portfolio.
  • Gather and assess information required for credit applications, including judgmental inputs.
  • Collaborate with CMA and CCM teams in constructing credit applications.
  • Maintain portfolio quality by monitoring triggers and ensuring adherence to risk management policies and guidelines.

3. Staff Management (5%)

  • Provide day-to-day coaching and development to Corporate Service Assistants.

Risk & Control Responsibilities

  • Ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements, Absa Operational Risk Framework, and internal policies and standards.
  • Embed a positive risk culture through effective risk identification and management.
  • Understand end-to-end processes relevant to the role, including associated risks and controls.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and responsible risk management in all activities.
  • Report all risk incidents, issues, and events using defined processes.
  • Proactively identify control weaknesses and recommend improvements.
  • Engage proactively with regulators and unions where applicable.
  • Complete all mandatory training within required timelines.

National Diploma or Advanced Certificate in Business, Commerce, or Management Studies (Required)
