ASSISTANT GEOLOGIST ( Ref: JHCL/AG /03/13)
Duty Station: Mine Site- Mbinga, Ruvuma.
Reports to: Mine Geologist.
Job Summary:
An Assistant Geologist is responsible for supporting mine geologists and engineers in geological surveys, exploration activities, and data analysis. This position involves assisting in fieldwork, collecting samples, conducting laboratory analyses, and maintaining geological databases. The Assistant Geologist is an integral part of the team responsible for identifying potential mining sites, evaluating mineral resources, and ensuring the accuracy of geological data used in mining operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fieldwork Assistance.
- Assist minegeologists in conducting geological surveys and field mapping to identify potential mineral deposits.
- Collect rock, soil, and core samples from designated locations using appropriate sampling techniques.
- Sample Preparation and Analysis
- Prepare samples for laboratory analysis, ensuring proper labelling and documentation of sample origin.
- Assist in conducting basic geological analyses and tests, such as mineral identification, grain size analysis, and density measurements.
- Data Entry and Documentation
- Enter geological data into databases accurately and maintain organized records of samples, survey findings, and analysis results.
- Assist in the preparation of detailed geological reports, maps, and diagrams under the guidance of Mine geologists.
- Geological Mapping
- Assist in creating geological maps and cross-sections based on field observations and sample analysis.
- Collaborate with mine geologists to identify and document geological formations, mineralization, and structural features.
- Equipment Maintenance
- Maintain geological equipment, tools, and instruments to ensure they are in good working condition.
- Assist in the calibration and proper usage of geophysical and surveying equipments.
- GIS and Database Management
- Assist in using GIS software for mapping and spatial analysis.
- Contribute to the management and maintenance of geological databases, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
- Reporting
- Prepare basic technical reports and presentations summarizing geological findings and exploration activities.
- Assist in creating visuals and illustrations for reports and presentations.
- Team Collaboration
- Collaborate effectively with other geologists, engineers, and field staff to integrate geological data into exploration and mining plans.
- Communicate findings and updates clearly within the geological team and with other stakeholders.
- Health and Safety
- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines during fieldwork and laboratory activities.
- Identify and report potential safety hazards and participate in safety meetings and training sessions.
10.Continuous Learning
- Stay updated with advancements in geological techniques, sampling methodologies, and industry best practices.
- Participate in training programs and workshops to enhance geological knowledge and skills.
Perform any other relevant duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor from time to time.
Key Qualifications:
- Academic and Experience Qualifications.
- Diploma in Geology, Geological Sciences, or a related field.
- Technical Competencies.
- Familiarity with relevant weight regulations and compliance standards. • Basic mathematical skills and the ability to accurately calculate weights. • Attention to detail and precision in recording information.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods(when need be) and perform tasks related to the operation of weighbridge equipment.
- Behavioural Competencies.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
- Good communication skills and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new geological techniques and tools.
- Experience.
- At least 1 year of experience in geological exploration and mining activities, preferably in the mining industry.
