About Mazingira Alliance for Community and Conservation (MACCO)
Mazingira Alliance for Community and Conservation (MACCO) is a Non-Governmental Organization officially registered in Tanzania (NGO/R1/0037). MACCO is based in Mang’ula, Kilombero District, Morogoro Region. The organization’s core work is biodiversity conservation, focusing specifically on the Udzungwa Mountains of Tanzania, through projects spanning biodiversity research, monitoring, and community conservation. As of 2025, MACCO manages a permanent staff of 28.
The Role
MACCO is seeking a highly skilled and professionally certified Finance Manager to provide strategic and operational leadership to the organization’s finance department. This senior role is critical for ensuring accurate accounting, maintaining strong internal controls, guaranteeing transparency and donor compliance, and offering effective financial support to all MACCO projects. The Finance Manager will also supervise and mentor the accounting staff to ensure the quality, accuracy, and timely delivery of financial duties.
Duties and Responsibilities
I. Financial Leadership and Strategy
Operational Leadership: Lead all financial operations of the organization.
- Strategic Advice: Advise Project Managers/Coordinators on financial planning, budgeting, and cost management to ensure alignment with MACCO’s goals and mission.
- Reporting & Analysis: Oversee the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and financial reports for all projects. Monitor and analyze financial performance, identify key trends, and advise senior management on necessary corrective actions.
Fund Management: Act as the initiator of project funds and monitor/review the disbursement of funds, petty cash, and payroll.
II. Accounting and Compliance
- Controls & Policy: Establish and maintain strong internal control systems across all MACCO accounts. Ensure strict compliance with the organization’s accounting manuals, policies, and procedures.
- Statutory Compliance: Ensure timely and accurate remittance of all statutory deductions and taxes to the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and other regulatory bodies, guaranteeing full compliance with Tanzanian financial regulations.
- Financial Records: Ensure accurate and timely accounting entries (GL, cash book, subsidiary ledgers, control accounts, etc.), including performing monthly bank reconciliations.
- Documentation & Archiving: Implement a robust filing and documentation system for all financial transactions, ensuring proper archiving and record accuracy.
III. Team Management and Training
- Supervision: Supervise and mentor the finance department staff, promoting a high-performing, accountable, and compliant team culture.
- Training: Train all staff on key financial processes, internal control systems, and reporting standards (including statement close processes, cash disbursements, and payroll management).
- Payroll Oversight: Oversee the preparation of payslips and verification of staff payments.
IV. Audits and Donor Relations
- Audit Facilitation: Facilitate internal and external audits, providing all required documentation and ensuring the implementation of audit recommendations.
- Donor Reporting: Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting to all donors, project managers, and senior management.
Required Qualifications, Experience, and Qualities
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of experience OR Master’s degree and 4 years in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- A minimum of 3–5 years in a direct managerial role.
- Professional Qualification:CPA(T), ACCA, or equivalent professional qualification is REQUIRED.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong knowledge of accounting standards (IFRS/IPSAS) and Tanzanian tax laws and requirements.
- System Proficiency: Proficiency in QuickBooks and MS Excel is essential.
- Core Skills: Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking abilities.
- Attributes: High integrity, exceptional attention to detail, and accountability. Strong leadership, mentoring, and team management skills. Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Communication: Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English, with strong communication and reporting skills.
