The University of Dodoma was officially formed in March 2007 when President of the United Republic of Tanzania Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete signed the Charter. In September 2007, the first academic programs began. UDOM is now the nation’s fastest-growing institution, with a campus that is larger than any other in the country and a reputation for creating competent and qualified people who can compete in labor markets.
When fully functioning, the University of Dodoma will be able to enroll 50,000 students, in accordance with Tanzania’s Development Vision 2025.
When UDOM is completely functioning, it will be more than three times the size of the University of Dar es Salaam. It is now 80 percent complete and is already two times the size and capacity of Dar es Salaam University.
The University of Dodoma currently has seven colleges: College of Earth Science, College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, College of Informatics and Virtual Education, College of Education, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Health and Allied Science, and College of Business Studies and Law. Recently, a new academic institute named Institute of Development Studies was established within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The institution provides undergraduate and postgraduate programs in almost every subject of study.
Several undergraduate programs are offered in the college of education, with an emphasis on challenges facing the education sector in Tanzania and worldwide. The college of education offers 11 distinct bachelor’s degrees.
The College of Informatics and Virtual Education is well-known in Tanzania and the East African and Central African area for its ICT expertise. Computer science, computer engineering, telecommunication engineering, information security, health and business information systems, and many more programs are available at the institution, both undergraduate and postgraduate.
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences provides courses in geography and environmental studies, languages, history, political science, international relations, development studies, theater and cinema, art and design, and a variety of other subjects.
The College of Business Studies and Law offers a variety of programs aimed at developing competent business and legal specialists. Accounting, finance, business administration, human resource management, international business, procurement and logistics management, information system management, economics, economics and sociology, economics and statistics, and law are among the degree programs offered at this institution.
Petroleum engineering, mineral processing engineering, mining, geology, geo-informatics, hydrology, and environmental engineering are all offered in the college of Earth sciences.
The college of natural and mathematical sciences provides a variety of scientific and mathematics degree programs. This college has three schools: the school of physical sciences, which offers physics and chemistry programs, the school of mathematical sciences, which offers mathematics and statistics programs, and the school of biological sciences, which offers biology, aquaculture, and aquatic sciences programs.
Medicine, nursing, and pharmacy are among the programs offered by the college of health and allied sciences. Students specialize in disciplines including surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, microbiology and immunology, paediatrics and child health, and pathology at the postgraduate level. Paediatric nursing, nursing education, public health, and midwifery are among the programs provided by the school of nursing and public health.
