Maternity Africa (www.maternityafrica.org) is a local, donor-funded, Christian nonprofit NGO registered in Tanzania. Based outside Arusha, it is devoted to helping make childbirth safe and to treating obstetrical fistula and other birth-induced injuries. We support local communities, provide information to keep mothers and babies healthy, as well as excellent medical care and training to help ensure safer deliveries.
PART-TIME Information Technology Consultant
Maternity Africa is seeking to recruit an Information Technology Consultant on a part-time contract, initially of two days per week on a self-employed consultancy basis.
The successful candidate will:
- Work closely with Maternity Africa’s Senior Management Team, advising how to use information technology systems effectively and efficiently and, where necessary, to improve them;
- Provide strategic advice and day-to-day guidance and user-training in connection with Maternity Africa’s technology and IT infrastructures; and
- Other tasks in connection with the computerized Health Management System (HMS), CCTV system administration, phone network management, printer and peripheral support, security and compliance, documentation and reporting.
Key tasks
- Clarify and document Maternity Africa’s system specifications, IT inventory and IT work practices, including backups, data security and internet-based systems.
- Analyse Maternity Africa’s IT requirements and give independent and objective advice on the use of IT.
- Define software, hardware and network requirements.
- Develop agreed solutions and implement new systems.
- Design, test, install and monitor new systems.
- Organise and deliver IT user training for users.
- Maintain and administer the hospital’s health management system (HMS), ensuring data integrity and system reliability.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to customize and optimize the HMS to meet specific clinical needs.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to the HMS, including user access and data security.
- Oversee the hospital’s CCTV surveillance system, ensuring continuous monitoring and recording of critical areas.
- Perform regular CCTV system maintenance, including camera calibration and software updates.
- Investigate and provide footage for security incidents and investigations as needed.
- Manage the hospital’s phone network infrastructure, including Voice over Internet Phone (VoIP) systems.
- Ensure reliable connectivity and communication services for hospital staff.
- Troubleshoot and resolve phone system issues and user inquiries.
- Maintain and support the hospital’s networked printers and peripheral devices.
- Monitor and replenish printer supplies, such as toner and paper.
- Troubleshoot and resolve printer-related problems.
- Implement security measures to safeguard patient data and sensitive information.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare industry regulations in all IT operations.
- Conduct regular IT security audits and assessments.

- Maintain accurate records of system configurations, maintenance activities, and user access.
- Generate and present reports on system performance and incident resolution.
- Maintain internet connectivity and troubleshoot as required.
Essential minimum qualifications and experience
- Holder of Bachelor Degree in Information Technology or related subject from a recognized institution/university.
- A minimum of three years of IT consulting or similar experience.
Other necessary qualities

- Excellent communication skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate complex information simply and engagingly.
- Able to keep confidential information.
- Fluent in Kiswahili, English and other local language(s).
- Well organized, with logical approach to decision making.
- Excellent work ethic.
- Have close attention to detail.
- Self-starter and able to work on own initiative.
- Able to work as part of a small team.
- Be flexible, ready, willing and able to take on other IT-related roles within Maternity Africa as the organization grows.
